Chittagong War Cemetery

The Chittagong Commonwealth War Cemetery or Chittagong war Cemetery is a Commonwealth War Graves Commission graveyard in Chittagong, Bangladesh.

Chittagong war Cemetery is a graveyard of the troopers who passed on in the Second World War in the eastern front. It is situated on the Badsha Meah Road (Joynagar Mauza) in Chittagong city. The site of the cemetery was originally a paddy field adjacent to a horseshoe-shaped hill spread on the east and south and located two and a half miles away from the then Chittagong city. The burial ground is kept up by the Commonwealth War graves commission. In this cemetery, there are 755 graves of war causalities.

During the war, the pioneer camp of the Fourteenth Army of the allied force was set up in Chittagong along with facilities for army training and British General Hospital No. 152. The hospital stayed employable from December 1944 to October 1945 and at first, 400 bodies were covered in this burial ground under the supervision of the military.

History of Chittagong War Cemetery :

This Cemetery was built up to respect ward troopers and other people who kicked the bucket in World War II. The graveyard was made by the British Army and there were initially around 400 internments. Graves have since been transferred to this cemetery from the Lushai Hills (Assam) and other isolated sites, and from Chittagong Civil Cemetery. Chandragona Bapist Mission Cemetery; Chiringa Military Cemetery; Cox’s Bazar New Military; and Civil (Muhammadan) Cemeteries; Chittagong (Panchalaish) Burial Ground; Dacca Military Cemetery; Demagiri Cemetery; Dhuapolong Muslim Burial Ground; Dhuapolong Christian Military Cemetery; Dohazari Military and R.A.F Cemeteries; Jessor Protestant Cemetery; Khulna Cemetery; khurushkul Island Christian and Muhammadan Cemeteries; Lungleh Cemetery (Assam); Nawapara Cemetery (Assam); Patiya Military Cemetery, Rangamati Cemetery; Tejgaon Roman Catholic Cemetery; Tamru Ghat Military Cemetery and Tamru M.D S Hospital Cemetery.

There are presently 731 federation entombments of the 1939-45 war here, 17 of which are unidentified.
There are a further 20 outside national entombments, 1 being a sailor of the Dutch Navy and 19 Japanese Soldiers, 1 of which is unidentified. There are likewise 4 non-war U.K military internments.

These Cemeteries are significant for many reasons. The most important one is probably the fact that only the dead have seen the end of the war.

A landing area path leads from the doorway door to the entombment territory which is entered through a metal entryway flanked by two little block houses of prayer. At the end of the war, the additional corpse was also brought to this cemetery from other temporary burial places in Lusai, Dhaka, Khulna, Jessor, Cox’s Bazar, Dhowa Palang, Dohazari, rangamati and Patiya. The names of 6500 seaman and naval personnel who died and the names of 15 ships sunk during the war action are available in a register kept in a structure of the cemetery.
